Out of touch

After recently reading my friends blogs and seeing there home makeovers and new hair cuts, I decided that it was time to reconnect myself with the world of fashion.

I have never really been known for my unique style or for being trendy or "in the know" when it comes to fashion. But I've always viewed myself as someone who is very observant and interested in what the latest trends are for those around me. In college I had roommates who were great examples of what to wear and where to shop. (although looking back at pictures I really should have taken a little more advice!) Then I moved to Hawaii where what you wear are mumus!
just kidding, (this is one of the only times I wore one) but really, you wear board shorts and t-shirts, and if you are wearing something nice you were most likely a "Summer Term Student" from Utah or Southern California who didn't understand the local style. (no offense)

When we moved back to the mainland I was pregnant and I couldn't fit into anything cute. Now here I am a (still out of shape, but working on it) mom who is too busy to think about what is cute to wear, and frankly goes days without wearing anything more than pj's with a pony tail holding back my recently, "unsuccessfully" highlighted, super long, washed if I am lucky, hair.

HELP!!!

I am taking suggestions on the following topics:

1. What should I do with my hair? (I have had it long since high school and I like it that way, I just need something different.)

this is what it has basically looked like for the past 10 years!

2. I know long tops are in style, but where do I get them, and what is a cute way to wear them?

3. I am in desperate need of a tan! What tanning products are good, or how can I get some sun without exposing Emma to the heat?

These are just a few things that have been on my mind, but I am
Open to Suggestions!

I would love to know what is in style!

I know I am in good hands!!

Deary,

I cracked up at your advice seeking comments! You have come to the wrong gal in me for the following reasons:
1. The only thing I hold in common with my fashion savy sister-in-law Anne is her name (my middle).
2. I haven't done anything drastic since 1997 and I get my hair cut/highlighted once yearly Utah which means dark roots 11 months of the year.
3. I think the mumu is cute!
4. I still have 25 lbs post-partum on me and think pajamas are a fab outfit for running errands.
5. I have to have my sisters purchase duplicates of their clothes for me to buy because I know they get it right and I don't have to try.
6. I am not as cute (or as Lizzie would say...GORGEOUS!) as you!

First of all...where are you in that picture? A long tunnel of greenery...I am intrigued! Second, I think you are a totally gorgeous mama!! When it comes to hair I say just experiment slowly, it's just hair and if you cut it and don't love it, it will grow back! And if you've had it long for a while any haircut you get will be a bit of a shock because it will be different then what you're used to - but I say be a little daring, who knows it could spice up your life.

When it comes to fashion, Anne is really your go-to girl. I mean with my funny ear/dangly earring intervention, she totally changed the way I feel about accessorizing! It's really helped me realize that I can be a little more bold in the things I choose to try on, and buy. Expand your horizons!

As far as long shirts go, I just like them cause they cover up my skivies! Long camis and cap-sleeved shirts (to be worn under things) can be found at numerous places online, Shade clothing, Modbe clothing, Layers clothing. But I like to just get them at Downeast clothing (I'm pretty sure you can shop online) because they are half the price! I love Target...they seem to have lots of long-shirt options.

Pretty much you are darling...just get out there and shop, or at least look around and see what you like...and try stuff you wouldn't have tried before! I don't know what Medford has in the way of great shopping...

Okay so Jill might not be your girl but Kate sure hooked you up with everything I would say. Go out of your norm, you know? Something I have a hard time doing still is accessorizing although I want to SO BAD! I am tempted to get a big pair of hoops though. Not until I have normal hair again. But I know EXACTLY what you meant by dressing in Hawaii and feeling so "summer term student". I feel like I stuck out like a sore thumb if I wore anything BUT boardshorts and t-shirts. But now it's time for you. You're in the right place for fasion and fitting in...the mainland. So go for it! And smart of you to ask for suggestions. I still need the help of friends with makeup and hair and I'm not ashamed to ask. In fact, I just got my makeup done tonight by a friend who hooked me up with what's great, what's not and I totally love what she did! Something i would never have been able to figure out for myself. So find help and use it! It's great!

All the places for long shirts that Kate mentioned are where I have recently found my FAVORITE shirts! All can be found by shopping on line if Medford doesn't have retailers. Shade clothing has GREAT shirts and cami's but are a bit pricy. A white cami from there will be your best friend though so it's worth the $12. And Downeast has really good stuff, cheaper especially when you buy sale price. Go online and you can get it all there! Good luck my friend! Call me if you have ANY questions before buying, I can hook you up with answers. Also, I found lots of really cute shirts at Ross. Instyle fasions for cheaper. Don't be afraid of bright colors too, it's perfect season for greens, yellows, blues, orange....not just white and black. So for it and have fun with it!

And as for the hair...well if you've read my blog lately, you saw a picture of the worst hair style choice I ever made so I'm not one for giving advice in that category. Sorry. But if I were to give ANY advice, I would go shorter, a bit longer than your shoulders and get some layers done. that will give you more body and shape. And cut some long sideswept bangs maybe. But you'd have to COMMIT to styling it, not just throwing it back everyday because you still can. Take the time and you'll look AMAZING!!!!!

But your friends are right, you are always beautiful, I have always thought you were and are. But sounds like you're ready for a change so it's time to kick it into high gear and go bigger than you're used to going. You'll be surprised at what you've been missing out on.

And about the tan, just about every brand makes a bronzer lotion that works great but you just have to use it everyday to keep the color on. My mom bought the Jergen's brand and her legs look great! Good luck!

Danielle said...

Pretty much I am just jealous you CAN get a tan! I like Jergans though. Your hair is beautiful. I know the same thing can get old though. You could get some layers maybe. I know you have before. Seriously though, your hair is the kind of hair other people spend tons of time and money trying to acheive. As for clothes I am feeling super out of style ever since we moved to and from Omaha. I am working on that. It doesnt help that none of my clothes fit anymore;). Oh but I do really love all the madras shorts out this season, which would look really great on you with your long legs and tan skin. Good luck!!

oooooh this is fun!

As for tans, I'm with Danielle. WHITE. In high school I used to love to lie out and tan, but I've recently come to terms with the fact that I don't have the kind of skin tone that should be out in the sun that much (you, my dear, do have that kind of GORGE skin) and that I'm going to get skin cancer if I do, so I'm trying to embrace my whiteness.

Next, hair. I agree with some layers. And, like Kate said, you can always experient--and hair grows back! I've had some mighty short hair in my day!

As for clothes--I used to get long shirts from layersclothing.com, but I don't love their stuff this season. shade online is probably your best bet. And, though you feel like, "hmm...is $18 kind of lot for a t-shirt?" I will say that I think their shirts and camis are a great investment because they have lycra in them, so after being washed a million times they don't lose their shape. I love that.

Lately I've bought some things at Forever 21. Here's why. #1. It's a lot cheaper than most places. #2. It's trendy and funky and fun. It kicks your wardrobe up a notch. You can order online. I also like to shop at Target. They have great stuff.

As for accessories, they are my fave thing. I have found some GREAT shoes and bags at, of course, TJMaxx. I really love jewelry and think Target has fun stuff. Also, you should look at my friend, Deon's website, tribaljewelryunlimited.com
She makes the COOLEST stuff and it's super funky, so you can be wearing a black t-shirt and jeans and one of her necklaces and look like a million buckeroos.

and p.s. you could wear a garbage bag and you'd look like a million buckeroos. You are beautiful. And I'm not just, as Em would say, blowing sunshine up your skirt. That said though, I know how it feels to be a new mom and feel out of touch and want some help. So I hope some of these suggestions help. But remember, even in a garbage bag--BEAUTIFUL.

Maybe you should try some long layers and some side swept bangs. Just a thought.

As far as the tanning thing goes, I have no help. The only tip I know is that if you use the bottle be sure to lather up with tons of lotion before to avoid the streaking look.

Clothes are definitely my thing. I love all the suggestions. Especially Forever 21 and lots of layering. Old Navy is still a great old standby for those of us who need to stretch every buck. And if you ever come here to So. Cal you can't beat the prices and style of H&M.

Welcome back to the land of fashion, it is a fun place to be. And don't worry about the losing baby weight thing too much, I am almost 2 years after my last baby and I still have tons to lose. I guess it is a long battle.

Thank you all so much for your advice, and complements. Who needs to hire a fashion consultant with friends like you guys. You all have better advice, and are a lot cuter!
Jill- Hey if your annual color is coming up maybe we could be each others moral support and go together, what do you say? :)
Kate, Brynne, Anne, & Katie- Ok I love the sites you sent me to. Love Downeast and you are right they are great prices, I also spent way too much time at forever 21. Man I wish they had a store closer so that I could try some of it on. I think I am going to be spending all my fun money very shortly internet shopping!!!
Kate- England (I know it was a long time ago but it was the only pic I could find that was an adaquete representation of my hair)and I love the Modbe site. I think I am going to buy a swimsuit from them. I totally wish that I could accessorize better. I think I need a lesson with Anne and Taylor too!
Brynne-I like Ross too but sometimes it's such a hit or miss. I have also been thinking about your wearing bright colors comment too I really need to venture away from all the B&W's that I wear. As for my hair I still think that you can pull off any hairstyle but I am not as bold as you. I think that I may have to start small and work up the guts to do something bigger.
Anne and Danielle- I am learning that "white" is relative. My white skin washes me out, both of you can sport beautiful winter white skin better than anyone I know! And then in the summer your skin glows even though you aren't super brown, you look lovely sun kissed!
Danielle- Mark loved your comment as he is worried that I am going to chop off all my hair! :) And as for you being out of style, I will believe it when I see it. And yes can we hang out when you come PLEASE!!!! I am so excited, we can go shopping! When are you coming?
Anne- I knew you would like this Anne. And, Are you working as a super model and I didn't know it? I saw you on your friends website... You are famous and BEAUTIFUL! Love your suggestions and I think I need an accessory intervention this summer. Can I book you? I also want to go shopping when you come. And I may have you buy me somethings in Utah before you come home, if you don't mind and/or have the time. You could be my personal shopper. Ha Ha!
Katie- I am still a little shocked that you said that you shop at Old Navy. Wasn't that you who wouldn't shop there when we lived in Parvo? Maybe not but I will always remember when I met you for the first time and thought, "now that girl knows fashion!" I will totally call you when I am down to visit. I want to go to the beach so bad. Can we go?

Mrs. Cropper said...

Trace-
You got it! We can shop 'til we drop when I come and PLEASE send your orders this way--I'll happily bring you anything you want. For example, if you want something from Shade, I can buy it here at the mall and then you won't have to deal with shipping. Same with tribal jewelry--I can get it directly from Deon if you want to pick out something from the site. OOOHH I can't wait to see ya!

The story about Cucina was hilarious. Check you out--Ashland tour guide. I'm glad they enjoyed the food though. That was my favorite restaurant so I loved working there. Imagine eating at your favorite $27 a plate restaurant every night. Can you even call that work?
I'd have to agree with what others have said about Anne. She is quite savvy and gets cuter all the time.
Pick some stuff out online and we'll totally pick it up for you before we come. We'll even take it back if you don't like it. We totally feel your lack-of-shopping-options-pain. One thing we're not excited for about moving back to the RV is trading in our Nordstrom for JC Penney and Banana Republic for Anchor Blue. Gotta love the Rogue Valley Mall.
